Chapter 11
Thirty spokes converge upon a single hub;
it is on the hole in the center that
the use of the cart hinges.
Just like the wheel relies on the empty hub for function, we rely on moments of pause and disengagement for productivity and well-being in our tech-saturated world. The "spaces between" our constant connection are as essential as the connection itself. Excessive stimulation without periods of rest and reflection will break us down.
Shape clay into a vessel;
it is the space within that makes it useful.
The true value of any technology, app, or device lies in how it serves us, not in how fully it occupies our time and attention. Mindfulness about the "empty space" within allows us to use technology as a tool, not let it become the master.
Carve fine doors and windows,
but the room is useful in its emptiness.
The doors and windows of technology open up a vast world of information and connection. However, we need to recognize the emptiness – the intentional space away from tech – to truly inhabit our lives, foster creativity, and find peace.
The usefulness of what is depends on what is not.
This central principle is a call for balance. Technology offers incredible benefits but also the constant potential for distraction, addiction, and shallow engagement. To truly harness its power, we must understand the equal importance of disconnecting, being present in the real world, and nurturing our minds and spirits.
